Ever since I’ve ever heard music, I thought it should be very clean, very precise – as clean as possible, anyway, and more or less tuned to people. Something they could understand, something that was beautiful, you know?Charlie Parker, Virgo

HAPPY BIRTHDAY VIRGO!
August 22, 11:44 am EDT: The Sun moves into the sign of Virgo, the Harvest Maiden, and we begin a new solar cycle. Many happy returns, Virgo!!
UNDERSTANDING THE SIGN VIRGO
Virgo is a mutable, earth sign and is ruled by the planet Mercury (you may enjoy my article on Mercury, from Casual Conversation to Cognition). Virgo energy is known for its ability to sort the wheat from the chaff – in other words, discrimination. The Virgo archetype is linked to one who makes the best practical use of things, combining intellectual thought with a service-orientated approach.
Virgo’s attentive approach to any refining process, coupled with their desire to master every detail, needs to be kept in balance lest they find the minutiae of life overwhelming them. Impartiality is key here, and that is one of the reasons why Virgos make such skilled and highly sought-after editors. We are further reminded of the Greek god Hermes (Mercury to the Romans), who had jurisdiction over translation, interpretation and messages – precision in language, including the language of music, is the providence of Virgo.
Charlie Parker, highly influential in the emerging creation of the jazz style bebop, had the Sun, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn all in Virgo. The advanced harmonies and novel tempos of bebop are a good example of the refinement process and attention to detail of Virgo symbolism. Note how Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker was also born at the Full Moon: Sun in Virgo, Moon in Pisces.
The Sun’s ingress into Virgo marks a shift of season: in the northern hemisphere we begin to move from the fixed phase of summer into the mutable (changing) phase of summer, while in the southern hemisphere the move is from fixed winter to mutable winter.
Having lived many years in both hemispheres, I can say with certainty that Virgo season always has an element of tidying up, tidying out, and getting organized. In the north, children return to school after a long summer, while in the south, householders spring-clean and prepare for the warm weather by airing homes and clearing out dead winter garden debris. Days are alternatively warm and cool, no matter which hemisphere you’re in!
Mercury moves into Virgo, one of the signs it rules on August 21, and will be here until September 6, for the most part granting us clarity of thought. However, the period August 29 – 31 sees a Mercury-Neptune square, which can feel murky if we have important business decisions to make. The suggestion is to delay any important decisions and embrace creativity, music, magic, art and flow during these few days.
There is a lot of retrograde energy about at the moment! Mars will turn retrograde on September 9, joining Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. From September 9 – November 14, Mars will invite us to revisit the period July 26 to end August and give us time to integrate some of the projects and energies that came up during the busy Leo cycle.
Mars retrograde periods can be productive times where we turn our energy inwards and are able to focus on discipline and self-control. The shadow side of Mars retrograde sometimes manifests as suppressed anger which, if held down for too long, can erupt. Being forewarned, we may choose our path this month with calm clarity. During Mars retrograde periods, it is the aggressor who looses.
Jupiter is ending its retrograde phase and will start moving direct on September 13, a cosmic counter-balance to Mars retrograde. Jupiter will be at 17° Capricorn for the entire Virgo season, so for those of you who have a planet or angle at 17° Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn, take note of that planet’s energy, as it will be magnified!
SOULFUL PISCES FULL MOON
September 2, 2020, 1:22 am EDT: Full Moon at 10° Pisces (opposite the Sun at 10° Virgo), a time when the veils are thin between the worlds. Avoid drugs and too much alcohol over this period; it is an opportune time for a dietary fast or for creative self-expression.
As the Full Moon is configured closely with Mars and Saturn (☽ = ♂/♄), and Uranus (☽-♅), be aware of potential moodiness or agitation. Plan to have a relaxing evening on September 1, one which may include soothing music and peaceful vibrations.
NEW MOON IN VIRGO
September 17, 7am EDT: New Moon at 25° Virgo, the time to clear out any residue emotions that are taking up space: find forgiveness, and let go of the past. Neptune opposes the Sun and Moon – the higher octave is compassion, the shadow side is confusion and delusion. It is time to let go of any fears and move forward.
The Uranus-Venus square suggests intensity of emotions, yet there’s plenty of grounding earth energy to counteract this, so tune in to nature and go for a walk. Practice living as if it’s your last day on earth.
“They teach you there’s a boundary line to music. But, man, there’s no boundary line to art.”
–Charlie Parker, Virgo
