February 18, 2021, 5:43 am EST: The Sun moves into the sign of Pisces, the Fish, and we begin a new solar cycle. Happy birthday, Pisces friends!!
UNDERSTANDING THE SIGN PISCES
Pisces is a mutable, water sign and is ruled by the planet Jupiter. Jupiter rules Sagittarius by day (its masculine/yang or outward expression) and Pisces by night (the feminine/yin or inward expression of Jupiter). Jupiter expands whatever it touches, and when the Sun is in Pisces there is so often an expanded emotional response and a need to protect the sensitivity within.
The glyph or symbol for Pisces (above), represents the tails of two fish tied together by a cord. This glyph originates from the Greek myth of Aphrodite (Venus) and Eros (Cupid) who transform themselves into fish to escape detection from the monster Typhon. Typhon, the fire-breathing Father of all Monsters, had come down to Mount Olympus with the aim of destroying the gods.
Like all Greek myths, this one has many versions. In one of them, Aphrodite ties her tail to the tail of her son Eros with a cord so that they will not be separated in the Euphrates River. After their successful escape, Aphrodite honors the two fish whose form they took on by making them into the constellation of Pisces. This tying together of Aphrodite and Eros seems to suggest a need for heavenly and earthly love to remain connected within us at all times, in spite of the constant emotional turmoil presented by life. The transformation of the gods into fish also speaks to the mutable nature of the sign Pisces and its emotional (water) essence.
In another version of the myth, two other fish appear to Aphrodite and Eros and carry them to safety on their backs. Aphrodite awards them for their altruism by casting them up to the heavens as stars. This version similarly points to the power of selfless love and the promise that when protection is truly needed, it will be granted. I like to think of the Euphrates River in this myth as the Great Mother, an endless source of divine love and compassion, available if we only remain connected within ourselves to our own divine part.
Of the three water signs (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces), Pisces is the only one without a hard shell or stinger to protect itself from the world. Pisces often disappear off the scene, rather than face conflict or emotional intensity head on, and are often found living alone or with someone who doesn’t demand too much of them.
The Pisces archetype is associated with creativity and compassion. Jupiter’s rulership of Pisces ensures that themes of religion or spirituality are so often close to the hearts of those who have strong Pisces placements. Tapping into universal creative energy also appears to come naturally to many of those with the Sun or Venus in the sign of the fish. Pisces who take to the stage or the movie set are successful because they are able to immerse themselves fully in the roles of their characters using emotional identification.
Pisces rules the feet and we may be inspired to take extra care of how we move through life this solar cycle. Observe how your two feet are dependent on one another and how they seem instinctively to work together in harmony. When one is injured, the other compensates. Like the two fish of the Pisces myth, our feet can show us how to be more connected to our entire body, and, out from there, to our lives.
HELPFUL DATES FOR THIS MONTH
February 18: Sun moves into Pisces, breaking away from the Aquarius stellium of AIR planets. We may feel as if we’ve had enough good ideas for a lifetime – but how do we FEEL about our actual current life situation? It’s time to process deeply as we enter the final solar cycle before the start of the astrological year on March 20.
February 20, 2021: Mercury stations direct at 11° Aquarius and slowly begins to pick up speed. By March 14, Mercury will be out of its shadow, and decisions put on hold since late January may resolve themselves. Take extra care with communication on February 20 – be clear, concise and kind.
February 24, 2021: Mars trine Pluto. This aspect builds a few days before the 24th, when it becomes exact. It may grant us extraordinary energy to work towards our goals – use it wisely!
February 25, 2021: Venus moves into the sign of Pisces, where she is exalted (lifted up). With Venus, Neptune and the Sun in Pisces now, it’s time to pay closer attention to your intuition.
February 27, 03:17 in Washington DC: Full Moon at 8° Virgo.
Mark Twain is quoted famously as saying, “Worrying is like paying a debt you don’t owe” – what wise words, and so apt for a Virgo Full Moon! Watch against self-criticism, perfectionism and, yes, worry, and instead use the beautiful gifts of Virgo to see what IS possible now. Clarity of vision may indeed be possible now, as well as the gift to accept that which is not perfect in our lives right now.
The Virgo Full Moon also shines a light on our health. Health concerns may be revealed after the Full Moon – listen to your body at this time and make changes to your diet and exercise regime if needed. It’s a great time to drop a habit that’s not serving you and to pick up a new, better, healthier habit.
March 5, 2021: Mars leaves Taurus (and lightning-charged planet Uranus!) behind and enters the air sign of Gemini. Take this as a day of adjustment and don’t push yourself too hard. Mars will be trining Saturn for most of this month (March 8 – 21) so energy application should be easier for all of us than during the February cycle. If you’ve been experiencing a lot of resistance towards a certain project, it will hopefully begin to dissolve now, and progress can be made.
‘Logic will get you from A to B.

Imagination will take you everywhere.
March 13: New Moon at 23° Pisces: the Sun, Moon, Venus and Neptune are all in Pisces. We’ll be called upon to begin new, creative projects, and to integrate what we’ve been working on since the Virgo Full Moon. Have we come to a greater sense of acceptance with the current state of our lives? Have we begun a new healthy habit? Are we worrying less and doing more to achieve our goals?
March 14: Mercury moves out of its shadow phase. We have a week before spring officially begins in the northern hemisphere and autumn in the southern hemisphere.
March 20, 2021: The Sun enters Aries – and it’s the Spring Equinox! Look out for next month’s Astrology Update and video offerings. Wishing you a soulful and creative Pisces season!!
Love and light,
Catherine
