Period October 22 – November 22, 2020

All dates and times according to Eastern Daylight Time

October 22, 2020, 6:59 pm EDT: The Sun moves into the sign of Scorpio, the Scorpion and the Eagle, and we begin a new solar cycle. Wishing you a very happy birthday, Scorpio!!

UNDERSTANDING THE SIGN SCORPIO

Scorpio is a fixed, water sign and is ruled by the planet Mars.  Mars rules Aries by day (its masculine or outward expression) and Scorpio by night (the feminine or inward expression of Mars). The Scorpio archetype is one who investigates the unknown, whether this be the mysteries of life and death, or the more secular mysteries of the world.

When the Sun is in Scorpio there is the gift of one-pointed focus and a fixed quality of emotional endurance, often connected to self-preservation.

The Scorpio archetype is searching for emotional regeneration through the correct use of will. The power of Mars may be used either to achieve personal gain or to protect and defend the collective.

Most Scorpio-Sun people are exceptionally skilled at hiding or controlling their feelings (water). Because of this, some may do well in politics or other positions of power and influence. Overseeing the wealth of others from the financial sector of the economy is also their province, together with their opposite sign, Taurus. Others with strong Scorpio placements are skilled at healing and are to be found practicing the healing arts, from medicine to body work to psychiatry. Delving into the depths of any subject seems to enliven Scorpio – investigative journalism, art, astrology, science – in fact, anything which they can dive into behind closed doors!

PICASSO (1881 – 1973)

Spanish painter Pablo Picasso, one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, embodies the Scorpio archetype. Not satisfied with the status quo in academic art, he delved deep into the mysteries of pre-Roman Iberian sculpture and embraced the power of art made by his ancestors. Through this, he “discovered” Cubism and, together with George Braque, set the art world on fire.

Never satisfied with the surface of things, his one-pointed gaze continued to slice through all the preconceived definitions of art. He used the inward-turning power of Mars for the good of the collective, making works of art, such as Guernica (1937), which awakened the world to the horrors of the fascist Franco’s bombings.

‘An artist is a political being, constantly alive to heartrending, fiery or happy events, to which he responds in every way. Painting is not done to decorate apartments. It is an instrument of war for attack and defense against the enemy.’

OUR FOCUS FOR THIS MONTH

As the Sun enters Scorpio, setting the tone for the next 31 days, the Moon is in an exact conjunction with Pluto, at 22° Capricorn. This suggests increased intensity for the month, and the need for us to find practical ways to direct our emotional energy. We may consider studying something new which is grounded in the physical world, such as a skill, or taking on a project which involves clearing out physical/emotional baggage. Our focus would be well rewarded if placed on specific projects (such as decluttering the basement or learning a new skill).

VENUS IN LIBRA

October 27, 9:41 pm EDT: Venus enters the sign of Libra, which she rules. October 28 is a wonderful day for getting your message out if you work in the beauty or arts industry as Venus is at a point in the zodiac where she’s sure to be noticed. Venus in Libra favors diplomacy and grace.

FULL MOON IN EARTHY TAURUS

October 31, 2020, 10:49 am EDT: Full Moon at 8° Taurus. The Taurus Full Moon this year occurs on Halloween, the holiday (or holy day) traditionally known as Samhain to the Celts. Samhain falls halfway between the autumn equinox (the harvest) and the winter solstice (midwinter), making it a sacred time of year to pay homage to the Sun on his journey. Like all holy days, special bonfires were lit to ward off evil spirits. The veils were said to be thin between the worlds, and food offerings were left out for faeries. Samhain was also the time when cattle were brought down from the pastures and some were slaughtered for the cold months ahead.

It sounds as if this year will be a magical and unusual Halloween as the Full Moon, exalted in the sign of earth-goddess Taurus, is in an exact conjunction with Uranus, the Awakener. Surprises and revelations may be in store!

With Neptune square the Nodes in the Full Moon chart, we may see some kind of deception revealed in the mass media in the days following the Full Moon. The higher expression of this aspect is of large groups bonding together through spiritual experiences such as prayer or meditation. The Neptune-Node relationship will be in effect for months to come, emphasizing the need for communities to come together mindfully to uplift the consciousness of the earth at this time.

MERCURY RETROGRADE RECAP

October 13 – November 3, 2020: Mercury in its retrograde motion. Communications may be challenged or interrupted, computers may choose to update themselves whenever they please, while items may be mislaid, only to be found again. Expect delays and reoccurrences, reconnect with old friends, and relax!

Mercury will be traveling between the portion of the zodiac from 25° Libra – 11° Scorpio so take note if you have an angle or planet in this range. As Venus moves into Libra on October 28, Mercury will join her there in his retrograde motion, bringing us a feeling of equilibrium for a few days.

NEW MOON IN SCORPIO

Mid-November: The sky is super energized at this time! Mars appears to be stationary in the sky, moving out of its retrograde period on November 14. A stationary Mars emphasizes the warrior-like energy of Mars in Aries, so avoid confrontations with loved ones and choose the way of the noble warrior instead.

On November 15, 00:07 am EST we have a New Moon at 23° Scorpio. The Sun and Moon at 23° Scorpio are in a quindecile (quin-deh-chee’-leh) aspect (165°) to Uranus, suggesting surprises or revelations for the second time this season! We may all be called to “live on the edge”, so to speak, especially as Venus is also square to Pluto at this time. November 15 -16 is a good time to get to the bottom of things through doing some research, or focusing on solutions to a problem that’s been bothering you, especially as Mercury returns to dance with Uranus once again. (American politics certainly reflects this intensity and probing energy at this time.) With Venus-Pluto, and Moon-Uranus, avoid emotional highs and lows, as there may be consequences after the New Moon.

As always, set your intentions for the month ahead with your own ritual at this time, and stay centered.

When you come right down to it, all you have is yourself. Your self is a sun with a thousand rays in your belly.’
Picasso, Scorpio

November 22, 2020: The Sun enters Sagittarius – look out for next month’s Sagittarius season Astrology Update. May you have a magical Scorpio season, making some time for mystery and romance in your life!

Love and light,
Catherine
